What specifically is a Boston Butt?

Is it a specific cut of meat other than other butts?

Or is it like a Virginia Ham?

Don't wanna ask my butcher for one and sound like a moron.
I believe they treat you with more respect and give you better cuts if you seem to have some previous knowledge.

The shoulder butt is generated from the upper portion of the pork whole shoulder. The shoulder butt will typically have all neck bones, associated cartilage and skin removed while a small portion of the blade bone will remain.

Sorry should have been more specific.

What does the "Boston" part refer to?

Good question...I always thought that the whole pork shoulder had two parts...the top half "Boston" & the bottom half "Picnic" ???
But I don't know what they actually refer to?
